Trench Coat

MUST HAVES  |  OUTERWEAR  |  Trench Coat

As the rainy season approaches it's that time of year when one needs to make sure they have a smart and elegant raincoat to hand. Let's be honest, most raincoats are quite ugly. There are only a couple of acceptable jackets and coats for this time of year. The Barbour quilted jacket is one, though should be reserved for casual or country wear, the Harrington jacket is another for purely casual use. The trench coat is the best option for smart or casual occasions.

Designed as military wear during the World Wars era, the trench coat proved to be a practical and versatile garment that kept soldiers dry in the wet trenches. The original trench coat was long and reached the top of a soldier's boots thus ensuring that they were as dry as possible. With button fastenings and a belt, the jacket was securely closed as well as retaining a smart uniform appearance.

It is rare to see military men wearing trench coats these days as more practical purpose-designed garments are used. However, it is very common to see these coats on the well-dressed dapper gentleman of the city. These coats simply look fantastic with a suit or worn casually with a pair of jeans. Stick on a pair of Wayfarers and you are good to go.

The only question is... Burberry or Aquascutum? The answer? Both! One in black and one in beige!
